Peter J. Paris

Peter J. Paris, is Visiting Professor of Christian Social Ethics and African American Religion at Harvard Divinity School and the Elmer G. Homrighausen Professor of Christian Social Ethics, Emeritus, at Princeton Theological Seminary. Born and raised in Nova Scotia, Canada, he taught at Howard University School of Divinity for two years before going to Vanderbilt University Divinity School, where he was the first African American to be promoted through the ranks to full professor. He is a past president of the American Academy of Religion, the Society of Social Ethics, and the Society for the Study of Black Religion. His books Black Religious Leaders: Conflict in Unity, The Social Teaching of the Black Churches, and The Spirituality of African Peoples: The Search for a Common Moral Discourse have been used widely in seminaries and colleges throughout the country.
