Is American sexual culture schizophrenic? Yes, and this has everything to do with the sexual politics of the religious right. Sexual opportunity is everywhere, but sexual rights have, at the same time, been concretely eroded.

Dagmar Herzog is Professor of History and Daniel Rose Faculty Scholar at the Graduate Center, City University of New York. She has written and edited several books and many articles on the history of religion, especially Jewish-Christian relations, on the histories of gender and sexuality, and on the Holocaust and its aftermath. During the 2008 elections, she wrote a weekly column on U.S. politics for the Tageszeitung (Berlin, Germany).
